After the downfall of Katyuris, Kumaon region was controlled by the Chand dynasty. In 1790, Chand kings were defeated by Gorkhas and then 10.5 years Gorkkhas ruled the Kumaon region. In 1814, Britishers defeated Gorkhas and they ruled all over Uttarakhand till independence.

Till 1854, Britishers established the Kumaon region’s headquarters in Nainital and in 1862, summer capital of the united provinces. In 1891, Nainital district was established.
